Great Wall Mutianyu

The Great Wall of China was commenced in the 5th century and thereafter rebuilt and extended to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire against intrusions by various nomadic groups and later the Mongol empire. The wall stretches for thousands of kilometres. The Mutianyu section, rebuilt in 1569, is one of the best preserved sections of wall and is wide enough for four horses to ride abreast. It has stairs and ski lift to get onto and off the wall and a toboggan ride down. This section of wall is surrounded by beautiful forests and offers the visitor many alternatives for approaching the wall and appreciating the region's natural beauty.
