Lama Temple | |||
Yonghe Lama Temple is the most important Buddhist Temple and spiritual centre in Northern China. In 1694, it was constructed as a residence for court eunuchs and then a prince who became the Yongzheng Emperor. Later, it became a residence for Tibetan Buddhist monks and so developed into the national centre of lama (teacher) administration. It is an active place of worship attracting pilgrims who meditate, pray and burn incense offerings. The Temple of Confucius was dedicated in 1302. Inside the temple are hundreds of stone tables given to honour thousands of scholars. The Imperial College was the leader in a network of advanced colleges from the 6th century AD and includes a hall where the emperor offered his advice and teachings. As both the temple and college are on the same site, you only need to purchase one ticket. The grounds are a tranquil retreat which, although refurbished, gives a profound feel for China’s history and Confucian traditions. The Temple of Earth (also referred to as the Ditan Park) was developed in 1530 by Emperor Jia Jing during the Ming Dynasty. The 40 hectare features lush gardens and tree lined paths. The Temple symbolizes the Earth and its construction mirrors these beliefs with its many square walls and altars. To finish exploring, walk down Wudaoying Hutong with a range of cool, contemporary cafes, restaurants, fashionable boutiques and rocking night spots. It’s great for vegetarian food and also the heart of the independent music scene. |
